Imperial Valley College opened its doors to students in 1962 on a 160-acre campus in Imperial, and is part of the Imperial Community College District.  The district includes all of Imperial County except a small area in the northwest corner of the county, that is a part of the Desert Community College District.

On Jan. 13, 1971, the board of trustees changed the name of the district to Imperial Community College District in order to emphasize the close relationship the college has with its community.

The extended-day program, which offers regular college classes at night, was initiated in 1952.
