The John W. Rice Diversity & Equity Award

2018 Competition

We are now accepting nominations for the 2018 Dr. John W. Rice Diversity & Equity Awards. This award honors Dr. John W. Rice, a former member of the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, who was a dynamic leader and moral conscience for diversity and equity.

The focus of the 2018 Dr. John W. Rice Diversity & Equity Awards is the Vision for Success.

Vision for Success

In 2017, the California Community Colleges Board of Governors embraced an ambitious strategic plan calling for sizable increases in the number of students transferring to a University of California or California State University campus, substantial improvements in preparing students for in-demand jobs and eliminating the achievement gap altogether. The Vision for Success makes clear that a focus on getting every student to his or her defined objective will serve as the “North Star” guiding all reform efforts at every level.

Goals

  1. Increase the number of students earning credentials by at least 20 percent.
  2. Increase the number of students who transfer by 35 percent.
  3. Reduce the average units accumulated by students who complete degrees to 79.
  4. Increase the number of students who get jobs in their field of study to 69 percent.
  5. Reduce equity gaps among underrepresented students by 40 percent over five years, and eliminate those gaps in 10 years.
  6. Eliminate regional achievement gaps in 10 years.

The winner(s) will be honored at an award ceremony, which will take place on July 17, 2018 at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento.
